Glenn Thomas Hayes - Chapter 06
Glenn is one of my oldest and closest friends. I remember meeting him as I walked up to the lifeguard station from 1st Street in the summer of 1964. He was sitting on the tongue of the lifeboat trailer, eating pastry from Arnot's Bakery and drinking a quart of milk. I had never before seen anyone drink a quart of milk at a single sitting. He gave me a rash of xxxx about being a worthless recruit. He had recently finished the Winter '64 recruit class and was ready to give back some of the grief he endured.
Note from Glenn in February 2013: "Uh, who . . . is gonna find, cut and split wood for the stove? Even if your back is up to the task, finding 'convenient' raw material and getting same to homestead might be problematic. I've been there/done that when I was in the 5th grade and my family job was to provide wood for the family's only source of heat (2 fireplaces). There was a more than amply abundant supply about 350 yards downhill from our house (which meant I had to drag/carry everything uphill). Granted, we were too poor to even own a file to sharpen the old axe I found, much less a sledge/wedge or chain saw and you won't have those particular problems. But getting raw wood to your stove could be a problem. Also, if your main source is the National Forest, sooner or later somebody could/might/probably will, object. Just some thoughts for your thinking and planning. Good luck. :)"
Glenn came from South Georgia and worked hard to make something of himself, which he did. His dad had him and his brother selling peanuts at local sporting events to raise money for his "medicine". Glenn got in trouble at Forrest, Lee, and Jackson High Schools and got a GED from Central Adult. The Lifesaving Corps gave him some good role models and discipline and got his life on a positive track. He joined the Marine Corps, fought in Viet Nam, and later put himself through college at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. We lived together and had adventures in Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa and other parts of California in the early 1970's.
